Human Horizon, 2024, GenAI images from Candy and Oankali prompts
Human Horizon asks you to find the horizon by looking through the creature. Built recursively—IPAdapter folding the genetic memory of Candy and Bedtime Stories for Oankali into one new body—the image is a thicket of glossy flesh-pink limbs, nylon-sheathed fur, white feathered ribs that part like a curtain. Between them, through the gaps in the merging body, the gallery recedes to a thin grey line. Lashed eyes open across the skin, as if the creature were watching too.
This is Butler's evolutionary drive made spatial. The Oankali don't end the human; they become the aperture you must peer through to see where "human" is headed. Their love is acquisitive, their mercy a slow consumption—and the vanishing point lies on the far side of their embrace.
You look through the soft architecture of what we're becoming, and there, narrowing, is the edge of what we were.
