Candy, 2024; nylon stocking, PVC inflatable balls, synthetic hair, glass marbles, thread; 60" x 24" x 12"
Candy serves as the seductive ambassador within Thie's Bedtime Stories for Oankali universe. Its cascading pink braided hair creates a disarming girlish quality that draws viewers into the alien ecosystem through familiar markers of innocence and beauty. Constructed from stockings, synthetic fur, and inflated PVC balls, the sculpture embodies the Oankali's paradoxical nature—beings who approach humanity through appealing forms while representing fundamental transformation. Candy functions as a bridge between human recognition and alien otherness, questioning whether this innocence is genuine or a carefully constructed lure. The work explores seductive transformation and hybrid becoming, asking what we risk losing when the technological other makes itself beautiful to us.
